Oriental Craftsmanship: Exhibition of Antique and Contemporary Timepieces

Time was, time is; time is past.

After long-term learning and observation from daily life experiences, ancient people gradually mastered the periodicity of astronomy and nature law, such as the rising and setting of the sun, the waxing and waning of the moon, and seasonal changes. They started to use these periodical phenomena as scales of time so they could work in an orderly manner. As a result, different types of timepieces were invented and improved throughout human history, such as the sundial, hourglass, water clock, and so on.

With the continuous progress and development of human civilization and technology, the demand for time accuracy has led to the birth of mechanical timepieces. Its scientific nature and standardization, have largely accelerated the modernization of human history and are of revolutionary and extraordinary significance.

These antique timepieces that have been passed down to the world today tell the story of time and history while keeping track of the time with their ever-present beating hearts.

The Macau Timepiece Museum and MGM are committed to contributing to the heritage and communication of Macao's history and culture by jointly organizing this exhibition, 44 representative pieces are selected from the museum, and a joint loan of 37 pieces from the collection with a number of independent watchmakers and up-and-coming domestic brands.

We believe that through this exhibition, audiences can learn more about Macao's horological history, and thoroughly enjoy this wonderful journey of experiencing the history and beauty across time and space. This visual treat will be an in-depth exploration to discover the scientific, artistic, social, and cultural values behind the timepieces.
